Why Art is Important!

Welcome to Miss.Knoth's Art Class

Thanks for stopping by CNE Elementary School's Art Studio!  This website is designed to keep parents and students updated on what is going on in the art room and to give student's ideas and tips for creating art at home.

Last year was amazing and we produced some incredible artwork across all the grades!  Our new art room gave us much more room to spread out and create some awesome masterpieces.  One of my favorite parts of the school year was our first ever Animal Art Night. On St. Patrick's Day we took over the Elementary School gym and turned it into our own art studio. We had lots of different art stations set up around the gym where students and their families could paint, draw, sculpt, and even have their faces painted. A portion of the money we raised we donated to the Clermont County Animal Humane Society. It was a big success and I am looking forward to having another Art Night this Spring.

One new thing to look forward to this year is our first Art Club that will take place throughout the school year after school.  Fourth and fifth grade students will have the opportunity a couple of times a month to stay after school and work on some extra art projects. I will have more information on this once school has gotten under way.

This year in the art room we will be learning about new artists, art techniques, and art terms that will help us become better artists. One of the techniques we will be focusing on this year is our drawing skills. Studies have shown that students learn new concepts/topics better once they have drawn it.  It is my goal this year to combine art with cross curricular topics such as math, language arts and science to help increase student comprehension in these areas as well as art.  I also hope that in exploring and learning about many styles of art and the different ways to create art that students will become independent and unique artists.

Events and Announcements
Updated August 2011

Important Dates:
*Thursday, August 18-Elem Open House, come by the art room and say hi!
*Monday, August 22-First Day of School!

I hope you and your families have all had a nice and relaxing summer. Here is a brief update on what to expect this coming school year.

I will once again be posting all of our art projects on
Artsonia, which not only lets us share the Artwork with friends and relatives far away, but also offers us a wonderful way to earn funds for the artroom through the customized keepsakes.  For each art project I pick several examples to post from each class. I also try to mix it up and pick new students for each project. My goal is to try and get a project from every student displayed on the website.

Thanks for taking the time to visit our website. I am excited about the 2011-2012 school year and am looking forward to once again working with your children. One of the best parts of my job is getting to watch how they grow as artists and people over the years.   I hope you will always feel welcome in the art room and enjoy all the masterpieces that the 2011-2012 school year will bring!

Here is what we are doing right now in art class:

*Kindergarten: We are going to be starting the school year off learning some basic art skills. We will be practicing our drawing, cutting and gluing skills as we learn how to make a collage and our first ever self-portrait.

*First Grade: We will be starting off with a unit reviewing color. We will begin by mixing the primary colors together to make an abstract secondary color painting. We will also be learning about two of Miss. K's favorite artists as we make a Vincent Van Gogh inspired sunflower painting and a Pablo Picasso inspired flower bouquet painting. All of these projects will increase our awareness of the importance of color and mixing colors in our paintings.

*Second Grade: We will also be learning about color. We will review color mixing from last year and introduce the concept of warm and cool colors. We will learn about what happens when you place these two color families next to each other. For this unit we will also be learning about artist Keith Haring as we make art that is inspired by his work as well as warm and cool colors.

*Third Grade:  We are going to be getting in depth this year into learning about the different color families. We will review primary and secondary colors, warm and cool colors, and introduce complementary and analogous colors. We will then pick our favorite color family and use it as our inspiration as we make a color wheel mandala.

*Fourth Grade:  We are going to be learning about the elements and principles of art. We will be focusing on the art element value and the art principles balance and proportion. We will be creating values in our art by shading or adding highlights  to show depth in our  picture. We will be using this concept as we create a symmetrical drawing of an endangered animal. We will glue half of a photograph of our animal down to a piece of paper and then draw the other half. We will incorporate balance in our picture as we make it symmetrically proportionate to the other half of our picture.

*Fifth Grade: We will start the year off my learning about monochromatic color schemes and artist Chuck Close. Students will learn how to mix color with black and white to make a color scale by creating tints and shades of that color. They will use this knowledge then to create a Chuck Close inspired Self-Portrait.
